Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions non-Muslim families ask most about personal status law in the UAE.
Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2022 on Civil Personal Status governs these matters nationwide, and in Abu Dhabi, Law No. 14 of 2021 applies before the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court. In some cases you can ask for the law of your home country to apply.
A civil divorce can often be granted at the first hearing, while financial matters and custody arrangements take longer depending on how much the parties agree. We give you a precise timeline after reviewing your file.
Yes. Non-Muslims can marry civilly before the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court, provided both parties are at least 21 and submit the required declarations and documents. The procedure is often completed in a single day.
Without a will, the spouse receives half of the estate and the other half is shared equally between the children, with no distinction between sons and daughters. A registered will lets you distribute your estate as you wish.
Under civil law the starting point is joint, equal custody for both parents. Where they disagree, the court decides in the best interests of the child, including living arrangements, travel and visitation.
Yes. Foreign judgments can be enforced before the execution judge if they are final, issued by a competent court, not contrary to UAE public order, and subject to reciprocity.
